/Services, Immigrant Rights, and Education Network (SIREN) Condemns Supreme Court Ruling Upholding Muslim Ban
Today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a shameful ruling that sided with hate in upholding the Muslim ban. The Muslim ban has been in effect since December 2017 for certain nationals from Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Venezuela, and Yemen. In a narrow 5-4 ruling, a divided Supreme Court endorsed the bigotry of the Trump Administration by allowing the ban to continue. Below is a statement from Maricela Gutiérrez, Executive Director of Services, Immigrant Rights, and Education Network (SIREN).
“Today’s ruling by the Supreme Court allowing the Muslim ban to remain in effect will go down as a dark chapter in American history. This ruling repeats the Court’s shameful legacy that previously allowed the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, slavery of African Americans, and racial segregation. History has viewed these rulings as a stain on this country’s past. The Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the Trump Administration’s white supremacist agenda. The hatred of immigrants and refugees by this Administration knows no bounds as we have seen with families being separated at the border and the incarceration of asylum seekers.
We are reminded that progress and change comes from the people, not just the courts. We stand with our Muslim neighbors, friends, and families as we continue this fight for the American values of justice, equality, and diversity. Despite the Supreme Court’s decision, we believe that in the end justice will prevail. SIREN is committed to working with community leaders and activists to promote the importance of civic engagement and pro-immigrant public policy. Our team of SIREN lawyers will continue fighting fiercely to show that immigrants and refugees are here to stay. The Constitution of the United States and our founding values built upon the idealism and sacrifices of immigrant visionaries will triumph over racism and hatred. We must keep pushing ahead.”

Hoy, la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos emitió una sentencia vergonzosa que se alineó con el odio en la defensa de la prohibición musulmana. La prohibición musulmana ha estado en vigor desde diciembre de 2017 para ciertos ciudadanos de Irán, Libia, Corea del Norte, Somalia, Venezuela y Yemen. En un estrecho fallo de 5-4, la Corte Suprema dividida respaldó el fanatismo de la Administración Trump al permitir que la prohibición continúe.
