SIREN Applauds Court Ruling on DACA and Urges DACA-Recipients to Renew

Yesterday, U.S. District Court Judge John Bates in Washington, DC ruled that the DACA program should be fully restored finding that the Trump Administration has not provided an adequate justification for terminating the program. The court ordered USCIS to begin to accept new DACA applications starting August 23 and to continue to accept renewal applications. The Trump Administration may also appeal the court’s ruling in that time. There are various court cases currently relating to DACA, including a hearing at the federal court in Texas next week. SIREN urges those who have DACA to renew as soon as possible and reminds those who have never applied for DACA that they can not yet apply. The following is a statement from Maricela Gutiérrez, Executive Director of Services, Immigrant Rights, and Education Network (SIREN):

“This ruling affirms what we have known all along: Trump cannot justify the termination of DACA. His Administration would be hard-pressed to find an argument that can withhold legal scrutiny which is why it should not appeal this decision and instead move forward with fully restoring the program. For those who do not have DACA, we remind community members that there is nothing to apply for yet and to be sure to not turn to those who claim that they can apply. For those who have DACA, make sure that you renew as soon as possible - there is no time to lose with other cases on the program making their way through the courts. Everyone, regardless of status, should be allowed to come and stay in the country - and this ruling gets us closer to ensuring that we live up to that value as a country.”

SIREN Aplaude Decisión de la Corte sobre DACA y Sugiere a los Destinatarios de DACA a Renovar

This summer has been full of unrest as immigrants and refugees continue to be terrorized across the country. Immigrant rights groups continue to call upon on legislators to stand up for what is right - the protection of immigrants fleeing from violence, hunger, and other extreme circumstances. While television cameras have captured the reunification of some detained children, there are countless individuals of all ages being held in detention centers, that need our help. History is calling upon all of us to be engaged in new and different ways, so that we can together change the tide toward justice.

UNITED STATES CENSUS: SIREN ENSURING THAT ALL COUNT

 

An accurate count of the U.S. population forms the basis for many important, but often overlooked political, economic, and social decisions that affect our daily lives. That is why community organizations like SIREN are getting a head start in preparation for the Census, so that all of our communities are counted.

In partnership with the County of Santa Clara and the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, SIREN’s youth volunteers embarked on a  canvassing campaign for Local Update Census Addresses (LUCA) in June to canvass neighborhoods in Gilroy, Morgan Hill, unincorporated areas of San Martin, and the city of Santa Clara. Our volunteers canvassed in over 50 neighborhoods identifying unconventional housing on single unit housing properties where individuals or families might be living to add to the Census count. Thank you, volunteers! 

TAKE ACTION TO OPPOSE THE CITIZENSHIP QUESTION ON THE 2020 CENSUS

 

In March, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross announced that he had directed the Census Bureau to add an untested and unnecessary question to the 2020 Census form, which would ask the citizenship status of every person in the United States. The fight to keep the citizenship question off of the 2020 Census has begun!  

The Census has historically missed certain communities at disproportionately high rates. Adding a new citizenship question will jeopardize census accuracy by deterring many people—already “hard-to-count”—from responding. 

Please take a few minutes to take action on keeping the citizenship question OFF the 2020 Census Form. The comments period is open until August 7th.

Submit an individual comment. We need to show the breadth of voices in opposition to the citizenship question. You can submit a unique comment HERE. 

 

KEEPING FAMILIES TOGETHER: THE STORY OF RICARDO

 

Ricardo and his partner Adi, are both from Puebla, México. His loving and happy family, which includes his two-year old daughter, was torn apart by ICE, who had gone to their home several times looking for someone who used to live at that address. Having no luck finding that person, they arrested Ricardo instead. He was taken to the Contra Costa detention center and remained there for a month. 

During that time, Ricardo explains how hopeless he felt being imprisoned all day with very little human contact. The day he was detained by ICE, Adi immediately looked for an attorney who could help her get him out. Unfortunately, the attorney she paid thousands of dollars to did little to nothing to help Ricardo. Not willing to give up, she came for a free consultation at SIREN to find the help she needed.  

 Adi was attended by SIREN Staff Attorney Grey, who she says she immediately trusted. That same day, she decided to allow Grey to take over the case instead of the attorney she had hired. Ricardo’s wife says it's the best decision she could have made. In one month, Grey managed to release Ricardo from detention and reunite him with his family. Both Ricardo and his wife are very grateful with the professionalism and trustworthiness Grey demonstrated throughout the case. They are also very thankful to SIREN for being a place of hope for all immigrants and refugees in the most desperate of times.

MEET YOUTH FELLOW DENISSE

 

"Hello, everyone! My name is Denisse Velázquez. I’m a senior at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. I’m a Latin American Studies and History double major. I was born and raised in the South Bay, so I’m very excited to be back home for the summer. I’m especially happy to be working with SIREN again, as a Summer Fellow.  

I first got involved with SIREN in 2016 when I participated in the Summer Youth Leadership Institute in 2016. This summer I have the honor of coming back to support with the curriculum and coordination of the Summer Youth Liberation Institute. My focus will be to build the political education portion of the program, which is a deep passion of mine and I’m really looking forward to growing and learning alongside this year’s participants!"

 

MEET POLICY FELLOW NITHYA

 

SIREN is pleased to have Nithya as a Policy Fellow this summer, helping us track immigration-related policy and litigation at the local, state, and federal levels. She also researches and develops community education tools on issues relevant to immigrants and refugees. 

Nithya has been with SIREN for over a year, starting out as a youth leader. She is a recent high school graduate from BASIS Independent Silicon Valley. During her senior year of high school, she completed a project researching the impact post-9/11 immigration policy had on the lives of immigrants. Nithya will be attending Tufts University in the fall, where she plans to major in International Relations and hopes to pursue immigration-related work in the future. Nithya's parents immigrated from India, and she was born and raised in San Jose. She speaks Tamil and Hindi at home. 

ABOUT YOUTH FELLOW HARMON

 

“I am currently a first generation college student at Fresno State. This is my third year at Fresno State studying Biology and minoring in Gerontology and Chemistry. My ultimate goal is to become a physician. I would like to return and serve in the Central Valley in order to reduce the health disparities that are present. In my SIREN Fellowship Program, I am working on a photo-documentary of South Asian elders who immigrated to the U.S and telling their stories of living and building their lives in the Central Valley and the current health challenges they are facing given the current political climate. I hope to use the knowledge I gain to empower my community and those around me.”

CENSO DE ESTADOS UNIDOS: SIREN ASEGURÁNDOSE QUE TODOS CUENTEN

 

Un recuento preciso de la población de los EE. UU. constituye la base de muchas decisiones políticas, económicas y sociales importantes, que a menudo se pasan por alto, que afectan nuestras vidas cotidianas. TOMAR ACCIÓN PARA OPONERSE A LA PREGUNTA DE CIUDADANÍA EN EL CENSO 2020

 

En marzo, el Secretario de Comercio Wilbur Ross anunció que había ordenado a la Oficina del Censo que agregara una pregunta no probada e innecesaria al formulario del Censo 2020, que solicitaría el estado de ciudadanía de cada persona en los Estados Unidos. ¡La lucha para mantener la pregunta de ciudadanía fuera del Censo 2020 ha comenzado!

MANTENER FAMILIAS JUNTAS: LA HISTORIA DE RICARDO

 

Ricardo y su pareja, Adi, son de Puebla, México. Su amorosa y feliz familia, que incluye a su hija de dos años, fue destrozada por ICE, quien había ido a su casa varias veces buscando a alguien que solía vivir en esa dirección. Al no tener suerte para encontrar a esa persona, arrestaron a Ricardo en su lugar. Fue llevado al centro de detención de Contra Costa y permaneció allí durante un mes.

Durante ese tiempo, Ricardo explica que se sintió desesperado al estar encarcelado todo el día con muy poco contacto humano. El día que fue detenido por ICE, Adi buscó de inmediato a un abogado que pudiera ayudarla. Desafortunadamente, el abogado al que le pagó miles de dólares hizo poco o nada para ayudar a Ricardo. Adi no estaba dispuesta a darse por vencida y vino a una consulta gratuita en SIREN para encontrar la ayuda que necesitaba.

La abogada de SIREN Grey asistió a Adi, quien dice que ella confió de inmediato. Ese mismo día, ella decidió permitir que Grey asumiera el caso en lugar del abogado que había contratado. La esposa de Ricardo dice que es la mejor decisión que pudo haber tomado. En un mes, Grey logró liberar a Ricardo de la detención y reunirlo con su familia. Tanto Ricardo como su esposa están muy agradecidos con el profesionalismo y la confiabilidad que Grey demostró a lo largo del caso. También están muy agradecidos con SIREN por ser un lugar de esperanza para todos los inmigrantes y refugiados en los momentos más desesperados.

Cuentan sus historias de vida y cómo construyeron sus vidas en el Valle Central, incluyendo los actuales desafíos de salud que enfrentan dado el clima político actual. Espero utilizar el conocimiento que obtengo para empoderar a mi comunidad y a quienes me rodean."

#ABOLISHICE MARCH AND RALLY:

Join ICE Out Of Fresno this Saturday for an #AbolishICE march and rally in downtown Fresno beginning at 8:00am. Central Valley Sheriffs have led anti-immigrant efforts that have resulted in the deportation of thousands of individuals and as a result have had a devastating impact on our communities. We will highlight four specific Sheriffs that have chosen to stay on the wrong side of history and have escalated attacks on our community through the entanglement of local law enforcement with ICE.

TRUTH ACT FORUM IN FRESNO

The Truth Act requires a local legislative body to hold a community forum annually if local law enforcement allows ICE access to any individual. Since 2015, Fresno County Sheriff Mims has worked closely with ICE to deport over 500 people. We need community members to attend the forum and ask key questions and demand transparency about the entanglement between ICE and the Fresno County Sheriff's Department. Foro Comunitario de Verdad

La Ley de la Verdad requiere que un cuerpo legislativo local realice un foro comunitario anualmente si la policía local permite el acceso de la migra a cualquier individuo. Desde 2015, el Sheriff Mims ha trabajado estrechamente con la migra para deportar a más de 500 personas. Take Action: #Save the Census

On March 26, 2018, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross announced that he had directed the Census Bureau to add a question on citizenship status to the 2020 Census. This alarming decision is bad for the census, bad for our communities, and bad for America. The Census Bureau has invited the public to comment on the 2020 Census, which will be an opportunity to create a strong, clear public record from a range of stakeholders and experts who oppose the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 Census. 

We need the community to stand up and fight back against this untested, unnecessary citizenship question and ensure ALL of our communities are counted. The deadline to submit public comment is August 7.

SIREN Applauds Ruling Upholding State Laws Protecting Immigrants and Urges Employers to Protect Immigrant Workers

Yesterday, U.S. District Court Judge John Mendez rejected much of the Trump Administration’s efforts to temporarily halt California’s laws to protect immigrants. In his decision, the judge denied a preliminary injunction against the California Values Act (SB 54) which limits local law enforcement entanglement with ICE, AB 103 which authorizes California’s Attorney General to monitor immigration detention centers, and a provision of the Immigrant Worker Protection Act (AB 450) that requires employers to provide employees notice of I-9 audits. While the judge temporarily suspended other provisions of AB 450, including requiring employers to ask for a judicial warrant before entering private workplace areas and to ask for a judicial warrant or subpoena before releasing private employee records, employers may still voluntarily comply with the law. The following is a statement from Maricela Gutiérrez, Executive Director of Services, Immigrant Rights, and Education Network (SIREN):

“The decision by Judge Mendez finding that much of these laws are binding and cannot be halted is a major blow to the Trump’s xenophobic and white supremacist agenda. The California Values Act is needed especially in parts of the state like the Central Valley where sheriffs and local law enforcement are frequently entangled with ICE and have cozied up to the Administration’s attacks on immigrants. And with more immigrants and refugees being incarcerated, monitoring and oversight of immigration jails are needed now more than ever. And though we are disappointed that the judge temporarily suspended the judicial warrant requirements for ICE to enter private areas of workplaces or get private employee records, we urge all employers to stand with their immigrant workers and voluntarily exercise their right to deny entry to immigrant agents without such a warrant and not release private employee records without a warrant or subpoena. This decision shows that we are in the right in leading the way, and California is on solid ground in creating shields of protection for the community.”

SIREN Disappointed by Failure to Redesignate TPS for Yemen

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued its decision regarding Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Yemen. The agency renewed TPS for 18 months but that only allows current TPS beneficiaries to renew their status. The agency failed to redesignate TPS for Yemen which means that Yemeni nationals who arrived to the U.S. after January 4, 2017 will not be eligible to apply for TPS. The following is a statement from Maricela Gutiérrez, Executive Director of Services, Immigrant Rights, and Education Network (SIREN):

“While the extension of TPS will allow current Yemeni beneficiaries to renew their status, this falls far short of what is necessary. Individuals and families continue to flee a country that is experiencing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises including ongoing bombings and armed conflict, food crises, and cholera epidemics. Those who arrived after the January 2017 deadline are in no less danger if they are forced to return. We will continue to call on Congress to seek a permanent solution for those left out of today’s decision as well as individuals from Haiti, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua who are facing forced deportation due to their termination of TPS.”

SIREN aplaude el cumplimiento de las leyes estatales que protegen a los inmigrantes y urge a los empleadores a proteger a los trabajadores inmigrantes

Ayer, el juez de la Corte de Distrito de los Estados Unidos John Mendez rechazó gran parte de los esfuerzos de la Administración Trump para detener temporalmente las leyes de California para proteger a los inmigrantes. SIREN decepcionada por no haber redesignado el TPS para Yemen

Our country is experiencing the worst humanitarian crisis of our generation, as this administration is preying upon immigrants and refugees, caging children, and criminalizing vulnerable people that are fleeing violence and hunger.  The sounds of children sobbing in desperation for their mothers and fathers have moved millions to rise up, get involved and help. People of different cultures and faiths are showing solidarity as we fight to bring justice to the thousands being detained by ICE.

While we may feel distraught and frustrated by the unfathomable circumstances we are in, we must continue to fight and focus on the progress we seek.

Progress and change come from the people. Our work to foster civic engagement, and to create a more informed and active community of leaders is more important than ever. SIREN is working actively to build the power of multigenerational immigrant and refugee leaders to carry this movement forward, and create the changes we need today. In this newsletter we are proud to share several stories that bring us hope for the future.

2018 OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY AGENCY OF THE YEAR AWARD

SIREN’S SUMMER YOUTH LIBERATION INSTITUTE 2018

Our SIREN immigrant youth leaders have arrived this summer and are learning the tools to achieve social change. In the current political climate, these young people understand that immigrant and refugee lives are under attack and that they have the power to make a difference!

WELCOME SIREN CENTRAL VALLEY FELLOW AYDE MENDOZA

SIREN welcomes Ayde, and all of our Summer Fellows in the Central Valley and Northern California. We look forward to sharing their stories with you over the summer.

“My name is Ayde, and I am an incoming sophomore at Fresno State. My family immigrated to the US from El Salvador to provide a better future for my sibling and I. My parents, neither whom have any formal education, work very hard to provide for my family. My father currently labors as a farmworker and my mother runs a small business. Both my parents are undocumented, and are TPS recipients, which has been terminated by the Trump administration. It is very disheartening to learn about the new immigrant policies that are being implemented and scary to think about what could possibly happen to my family and the millions of immigrants who live in this country. I grew up in a small town called Mendota, where there is a large immigrant community and the fear of deportation is runs high.  

As a first generation Salvadoreña, I am very motivated to pursue a higher education to support my family and give back to my community. During my time at SIREN’s Fresno office I will be working on a research project that tells the story of why Salvadoreños immigrated to Mendota, California, what their life is like and the impact on their health and well-being caused by the current administration’s decision to end TPS for Salvadoreños seeking asylum.”

SIREN SAVING LIVES – STORY OF A REFUGEE

Irosshi is a 23-year-old activist from Maracaibo, Venezuela. He grew up witnessing many injustices in his country, so at a very young age he decided to get involved with the opposition party, Primero Justicia, firmly believing that in doing so, his country would soon change for the better.

Unfortunately, his dreams for a better Venezuela fell apart over the past two years. After President Hugo Chavez died, President Maduro took over and things quickly took an ugly turn. Due to the high rise of inflation, food and basic necessities became extremely expensive. Irosshi recalls that it is common for there to be no light or internet for weeks at a time. This only further fueled Irosshi’s desire to organize and create a change in his beloved country. Unfortunately, the government became extremely violent towards dissenters. 

Irosshi experienced this violence first hand on two separate occasions – as he was threatened and persecuted by government military officials, and also physically beaten. He was left with no choice than to leave his beloved country.

Due to his limited funds, Irosshi began filling out a political asylum application by himself but soon realized that something so sensitive needed to be handled by experts. He called several organizations throughout the Bay Area to see where he could receive help. Every single one that he called told him that they either did not help with political asylum cases or did not have the capacity to help. He was beginning to lose hope until SIREN took his case. 

According to Irosshi, SIREN’s Supervising Attorney Shouan was always professional, kept Irosshi informed of his case, and even helped him deal with the trauma. Irosshi is tremendously thankful to the SIREN team for being there for him when he needed it the most. He said, “When everyone else said no, SIREN said yes.”

Irosshi currently has been going to several interviews hoping to obtain a job in computer science, the degree he earned in college. He hopes to be able to soon send money to his father and grandmother in Venezuela.

VOTAR PARA GANAR/VOTE TO WIN

SIREN's Civic Engagement team wrapped up the primary election season by registering over 10,000 voters in the Bay Area and the Central Valley, and making over 30,000 phone calls to immigrant and youth voters in Santa Clara, San Mateo, and Counties in the Central Valley.  As a result we helped to pass all state propositions that were recommended in SIREN’s multilingual voter guide.

Below is a rundown of the ballot initiatives that we weighed in on:

Prop 68: Fund for Parks and Water - PASS

Prop 69: Diesel tax - PASS

Prop 70: Corporate-led attack on clean energy - FAIL (We recommended voting NO)

Prop 71: Better start date for ballot measures - PASS

Prop 72: Support for home water rain collection - PASS

We also had a clean sweep, with all the local measures we focused on:

Measure A: City of Santa Clara voter ranking - FAIL (We recommended voting NO)

Measure B: Weakens affordable housing in San Jose - FAIL (We recommended voting NO)

Measure C:  Expands affordable housing in San Jose - PASS

Measure E: Mountain View-Los Altos High School District bond - PASS

Stanislaus County

Measure V: Patterson Joint Union School District Bond - PASS

Merced County

Measure X: Los Banos School District Bond - PASS

"Mi nombre es Ayde, y soy un estudiante de segundo año entrante en Fresno State. Mi familia emigró a los EE. UU. desde El Salvador para brindar un mejor futuro a mi hermano y a mí. Mis padres, que no tienen ninguna educación formal, trabajan arduamente para mantener a mi familia. Mi padre trabaja actualmente como un campesino y mi madre tiene un pequeño negocio. Mis padres son indocumentados y son receptores de TPS, que ha sido cancelado por la administración de Trump. Es muy desalentador aprender sobre las nuevas políticas de inmigración que se están implementando y es aterrador pensar en lo que podría pasarle a mi familia y a los millones de inmigrantes que viven en este país. Crecí en un pequeño pueblo llamado Mendota, donde hay una gran comunidad de inmigrantes y el temor a la deportación es alto.

Como salvadoreña de primera generación, estoy muy motivado para buscar una educación superior para apoyar a mi familia y devolverle a mi comunidad. Durante mi tiempo en la oficina de SIREN en Fresno, estaré trabajando en un proyecto de investigación que cuenta la historia de por qué los salvadoreños inmigraron a Mendota, California, cómo es su vida y el impacto en su salud y bienestar causado por la decisión de la administración actual de fin del TPS para los salvadoreños que buscan asilo ".

SIREN SALVANDO VIDAS - HISTORIA DE UN REFUGIADO

Irosshi es un activista de 23 años de Maracaibo, Venezuela. Creció siendo testigo de muchas injusticias en su país, por lo que desde muy joven decidió involucrarse con el partido de la oposición, Primero Justicia, creyendo firmemente que al hacerlo, su país pronto cambiaría para mejor.

Desafortunadamente, sus sueños de una Venezuela mejor se desmoronaron en los últimos dos años. Después de que el presidente Hugo Chávez murió, el presidente Maduro se hizo cargo y las cosas rápidamente tomaron un giro desagradable. Debido al alto aumento de la inflación, los alimentos y las necesidades básicas se volvieron extremadamente caros. Irosshi recuerda que es común que no haya luz o internet durante semanas. Esto solo impulsó el deseo de Irosshi de organizarse y crear un cambio en su amado país. Lamentablemente, el gobierno se volvió extremadamente violento con los disidentes.

Irosshi experimentó esta violencia de primera mano en dos ocasiones distintas, ya que fue amenazado y perseguido por oficiales militares del gobierno, y también físicamente golpeado. No le quedó más remedio que abandonar su amado país.

Debido a sus fondos limitados, Irosshi comenzó a llenar una solicitud de asilo político solo, pero pronto se dio cuenta de que algo tan sensible debía ser manejado por expertos. Llamó a varias organizaciones en todo el Área de la Bahía para ver dónde podía recibir ayuda. Todos y cada uno de los que llamó le dijeron que o bien no ayudaron con los casos de asilo político o que no tenían la capacidad de ayudar. Estaba empezando a perder la esperanza hasta que SIREN tomó su caso.

Según Irosshi, el Fiscal Supervisor de SIREN, Shouan, siempre fue profesional, mantuvo a Irosshi al tanto de su caso e incluso lo ayudó a lidiar con el trauma. Irosshi está tremendamente agradecido con el equipo de SIREN por estar ahí para él cuando más lo necesitaba. Él dijo: "Cuando todos los demás dijeron que no, SIREN dijo que sí".

Irosshi actualmente ha ido a varias entrevistas con la esperanza de obtener un trabajo en ciencias de la computación, la licenciatura que obtuvo en la universidad. Espera poder enviar pronto dinero a su padre y abuela en Venezuela.

Como resultado, ayudamos a aprobar todas las propuestas estatales que se recomendaban en la guía multilingüe para votantes de SIREN.

As another month passes by, we continue to witness assaults on our immigrant and refugee community coming from the president himself, Attorney General Sessions, the Department of Homeland Security, among others. 

• Infants and children are being torn from the arms of their parents.
• Refugees fleeing violence and hunger are being criminalized and labeled as gang members and human traffickers.
• Just this past week, Claudia Patricia Gómez González, "La Princesita," a young, unarmed Guatemalan woman was murdered by a Border Patrol officer.

When will these atrocities stop? When will justice and human decency prevail?

As we face these formidable challenges, SIREN asks that you join us in the movement to defend immigrants and refugee rights. Also join us in our efforts to register and inform voters between now and June 5. By making our voices heard at the ballot box, we can change the current tide. We must also prepare the next generation of leaders in our community. This is at the core of SIREN’s mission to support immigrants and refugees to become their own agents of change.

Trump Administration’s Efforts to De-humanize Immigrants

This week, the Trump administration has put on full display their core belief that immigrants and refugees are not worthy of human dignity and respect. The president himself, while meeting with law enforcement officials, referred to immigrants as “animals.” His comments are consistent with his and his administration’s desire to cleanse the country of immigrants and refugees, and to deny the positive contributions that immigrants have made for generations. Furthermore, top national media outlets reported this week that the Trump administration was exploring the use of military bases for warehousing immigrant children detained at the border. While history is filled with tyrants who have spread hate and lies to justify their trails of blood and destruction, SIREN will not stand for history to repeat itself. “The United States of America is in crisis as its core values are being challenged by racist, anti-immigrant officials in the new administration. They have left no room for misinterpretation when they are callously referring to immigrants as below human, and when immigrant children are being stripped of their innocence. These are not the actions of a civil society. SIREN is more vested than ever in fighting this administration to ensure that immigrants and their children are treated humanely, with dignity and respect. We will continue to mobilize voters and educate the community about their rights until the hateful rhetoric and actions of this administration are stopped,” said Maricela Gutiérrez, Executive Director of SIREN.

Los Esfuerzos de la Administración Trump para Deshumanizar a los Inmigrantes

Esta semana, la administración de Trump ha puesto de manifiesto su creencia fundamental de que los inmigrantes y refugiados no son dignos de la dignidad y el respeto. El propio presidente, mientras se reunía con oficiales de la ley, se refirió a los inmigrantes como "animales." 2018 Liberation youth Institute // 2018 INSTITUTO DE VERANO DE LIBERACIÓN

The Summer Liberation Youth Institute is a program designed to empower immigrant youth with grassroots community organizing, policy advocacy, civic engagement, and campaign development tools to build a movement for social justice. Youth will engage in critical discussions on systems of oppression and privilege, education access, LGBTQ issues, racial  and economic equity, problem solving strategies, organizing and much more! 

Participants will gain skills in:  immigration policy advocacy 101, campaign planning, civic engagement, political education, media training, community organizing, and will have the opportunity to attend field trips to; social justice and advocacy events, and conduct legislative  visits. 

Program Dates: 10 sessions (10 am -5 pm)
 June 14, June 16*, June 19, June 20, June 23*, June 26, 
June 28, June 30*, July 3, July 5 (*Saturdays)

Program Graduation: Monday July 9, 2018 (5:30 -7:00 PM)

2018 INSTITUTO DE VERANO DE LIBERACIÓN PARA JÓVENES:

El Instituto de Verano de Liberacion para jóvenes es un programa diseñado para empoderar a los jóvenes inmigrantes con conocimiento acerca de como apoyar las políticas y leyes, herramientas de compromiso cívico y de desarrollo de campañas para construir un movimiento para la justicia social.Los jóvenes participarán en discusiones críticas sobre los sistemas de opresión y privilegios, acceso a la educación, LGBTQ, injusticia racial, desigualdad económica, estrategias de resolución de problemas, y mucho más. 

Los participantes obtendrán habilidades de política de inmigración, defensa de la deportación, planificación de campañas, compromiso cívico, asuntos sociales, organización comunitaria, y tendrán la oportunidad de asistir a eventos de justicia social y defensa, oficinas legislativas para reunirse e interactuar con funcionarios electos y líderes comunitarios. 
¡El instituto tiene como objetivo capacitar a los jóvenes a entender problemas sociales y aprender a como apoyar el cambio social!

STAND UP WITH SIREN ON MAY DAY/¡PONTE DE PIE CON SIREN EN EL PRIMERO DE MAYO!

Today is May Day around the world. For many, it signifies a day to commemorate the long struggle for worker’s rights. Here in the United States, it has more recently become associated with the fight for immigrant and refugee rights. It’s an important day to stand up and celebrate the role that immigrant workers play in the economy, especially where SIREN works in Northern and Central California.

Now more than ever, especially with the Trump Administration waging war on immigrants and workers alike, we need a day to celebrate the people bearing the brunt of this war. SIREN invites you to do just that through the two May Day marches we’re supporting - in San Jose or on Facebook and Mountain View.

Come join SIREN and our grassroots leaders and youth to stand up for the rights of workers and immigrants. And if you would like to help make sure SIREN is able to continue speaking out, and supporting the important leaders who lead our work, please consider making a donation.

Hoy celebramos el Primero de Mayo en todo el mundo. Para muchos, significa un día para conmemorar la larga lucha por los derechos de los trabajadores. Dear Friends,

Our immigrant and refugee communities continue to be attacked by the highest levels of government. Under the current administration, the America that once opened its arms to the tired, poor, homeless, and huddled masses seems to be fading.

Most recently, we have witnessed the militarization of our Southwestern border, signaling war against individuals who are fleeing their home countries to escape the direst of circumstances. While California has generally rejected anti-immigrant policies coming from Washington under the Trump admristration, Governor Jerry Brown has deployed 400 National Guard personnel to the border. The caveat is that the National Guard would not enforce federal immigration laws, but would only “support operations against drug traffickers, gun runners and smuggling gangs”.

We must continue to not only be watchful, but to be loud in our opposition to policies that violate human rights.

SIREN is at the front lines of this war on our communities, and your support is critical to being able to serve thousands of individuals in need. SHERIFF CANDIDATE FORUM

One of SIREN’s top priorities is to foster civic engagement within our communities through voter registration and education. As part of this commitment, on April 24th, 2018, SIREN hosted a candidate forum for candidates running for Santa Clara County Sheriff at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. All of the candidates on the ballot were invited, and the following participated:

• John Hirokawa
• Joseph La Jeunesse
• Martin Monica
• Jose Salcido

At the forum, the Sheriff candidates discussed their stances on immigration, public safety, and their priorities if elected. We asked questions about their positions on sanctuary cities, ICE enforcement, the County’s civil detainer policy, community policing, and many other audience-generated topics.

Our thanks to all who attended! It is vitally important that as a community we continue to ask tough questions of prospective and current elected officials, and that we keep them accountable. This is democracy in action.

IMPORTANT DACA UPDATE

SIREN applauds the latest decision on DACA by U.S. District Judge John Bates. This is the third time that a federal judge has reprimanded the Trump Administration for ending DACA.

• What is different about this new decision by Judge Bates, is that it opens up the possibility that the federal government will have to start accepting new DACA applications, whereas the two previous decisions were just about renewing DACA applications.
• Judge Bates has given the U.S. Department of Homeland Security 90 days to come up with a valid reason for why it ended DACA.
• Even though new applications cannot yet be submitted, thanks to the previous decisions by federal courts in California and New York, DACA renewal applications are still being accepted. 

While there is no immediate change that comes from the latest decision, SIREN is optimistic that there will be movement to open up the possibility of the federal government accepting new DACA applications. We will continue to stand up, raise our voices, and advocate for our communities through policy and legal action.

• SIREN demands that DHS and the federal government accept the judge’s decision and allow for new applications to be accepted.
• We urge DHS and the Trump Administration to stop playing games with DACA youth, and ultimately for Congress to grant DREAMers a permanent path to citizenship. 

STAFF PROFILE: AMANDA ALVARADO FORD

It is our pleasure to introduce one of SIREN’s newest team members, Amanda Alvarado- Ford, who is an immigration attorney and our Legal Services Manager. Amanda was born and raised in Santa Clara, California. She is the proud daughter of Mexican immigrants.

Upon graduating from law school, Amanda worked as a labor lawyer at the National Labor Relations Board in New York, NY, New Jersey, and San Francisco. While working in San Francisco, she was assigned a case involving a group of Mexican immigrant welders who had been fired for trying to organize a union in their workplace. Though she was able to demonstrate they had been the victims of unfair labor practices and obtained back wages for them, the case was not a complete success. Since these workers had lacked work authorization, she could not get them reinstated to their prior positions.

After that experience, Amanda was determined to learn immigration law. Through this specialization, she saw the potential to help people become documented, and obtain work authorization. This would create a pathway to residency and ultimately citizenship, thereby making Amanda’s work truly transformational.

Most recently, Amanda collaborated with SIREN immigration attorney Grey Torrico on a T visa case for a trafficking victim. Amanda shared, “This client has taught me so much about the power of perseverance and rising above personal tragedy and disappointment. I am very happy to be a part of the SIREN team and look forward to helping the immigrant community through collaborating with my co-workers in the Immigration Legal Services Program.”

FORO DE CANDIDATOS PARA ALGUACIL

Una de las principales prioridades de SIREN es fomentar el compromiso cívico dentro de nuestras comunidades a través del registro de votantes y la educación. Como parte de este compromiso, el 24 de abril de 2018, SIREN organizó un Foro de Candidatos para Alguacil del Condado de Santa Clara en el Centro de Mountain View Para Las Artes Escénicas. Todos los candidatos en la boleta fueron invitados y participaron los siguientes:

ACTUALIZACIÓN IMPORTANTE SOBRE DACA

SIREN aplaude la última decisión sobre DACA por parte del Juez Federal John Bates. Esta es la tercera vez que un juez federal ha reprendido a la Administración de Trump por terminar DACA.

• Lo que es diferente acerca de esta nueva decisión del Juez Bates es que abre la posibilidad de que el gobierno federal tenga que comenzar a aceptar nuevas solicitudes de DACA, mientras que las dos decisiones anteriores consistieron simplemente en renovar las solicitudes de DACA.
• El Juez Bates le ha dado 90 días al Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (Homeland Security) para presentar una razón válida por haber terminado DACA.

• Demandamos a DHS y a la Administración de Trump a que dejen de jugar con los jóvenes de DACA y últimamente que el Congreso otorgue a los DREAMers un camino permanente hacia la ciudadanía.

UN PERFIL: AMANDA ALVARADO FORD

Es un placer presentarles a uno de los miembros más nuevos del equipo de SIREN, Amanda Alvarado-Ford, quien es abogada de inmigración y nuestra Gerente de Servicios Legales. Amanda nació y creció en Santa Clara, California. Ella es orgullosamente la hija de inmigrantes mexicanos.

Al graduarse de la facultad de derecho, Amanda trabajó como abogada laboral en la Junta Nacional de Relaciones Laborales en Nueva York, Nueva York, Nueva Jersey y San Francisco. Mientras trabajaba en San Francisco, se le asignó un caso que involucraba a un grupo de soldadores inmigrantes mexicanos que habían sido despedidos por tratar de organizar un sindicato en su lugar de trabajo. A pesar de que pudo demostrar que habían sido víctimas de prácticas laborales injustas y que obtuvieron salarios atrasados ara ellos, el caso no fue un éxito completo. Como estos trabajadores carecían de autorización para trabajar, no pudo lograr que volvieran a sus puestos anteriores.

Después de esa experiencia, Amanda estaba decidida a aprender sobre la ley de inmigración. A través de esta especialización, ella vio el potencial para ayudar a las personas a documentarse y obtener autorización para trabajar. Esto crearía un camino hacia la residencia y, en última instancia, hacia la ciudadanía, haciendo que el trabajo de Amanda sea verdaderamente transformador.

Más recientemente, Amanda colaboró on Gray Torrico, abogado de inmigración de SIREN, en un caso de visa T para una víctima de tráfico. Amanda compartió: "Este cliente me ha enseñado mucho sobre el poder de la perseverancia y sobrellevar la tragedia personal y la decepción. Estoy muy feliz de ser parte del equipo de SIREN y espero ayudar a la comunidad inmigrante a través de la colaboración con mis compañeros de trabajo en el Programa de Servicios Legales de Inmigración".
