Protesters Urge County Supervisors Against ICE Entanglement
/More than 50 community members gathered outside of the Santa Clara County offices in a solidarity rally against implementation of the latest deportation program, PEP (Priority Enforcement Program for deportation). They marched to the 10th floor offices of the Supervisors to deliver their message and this powerful video.
Through their efforts, they won a process delay, and continue to pressure County officials calling for no entanglement with ICE
San Jose, CA -- The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors has delayed a vote on whether it will participate in the federal Priority Enforcement Program (PEP), which would allow local law enforcement to notify federal immigration officials when certain immigrants are processed through their jails. The item will now be heard at the November 17th Supervisors’ meeting.
On Monday, October 19th, more than 50 people gathered for a Solidarity Rally at the County building to continue to pressure County officials to oppose the PEP program’s implementation.
Persistent pressure through phone calls, petitions, and actions from community, faith, immigrant and civil rights groups calling for a thorough and transparent dialogue about the issue led to the delay. The FIRE Coalition, in partnership with community allies opposing PEP, plan to continue efforts to ensure that public safety and community trust is prioritized, and that our local law enforcement officials are not forced to carry out the dirty work for ICE.
