SIREN Hails SCOTUS Decision to Hear Case Involving President Obama’s Executive Actions on Immigration

PRESS STATEMENT

(SAN JOSE, CA)— Services, Immigrant Rights, and Education Network (SIREN) today hailed the Supreme Court decision to hear the United States v. Texas case involving President Obama’s executive action programs, expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA), that would grant administrative relief to millions of immigrant families.

Last year, SIREN joined the amicus brief filed with the Supreme Court by immigrant advocacy organizations from across the country urging them to review the case. The brief included the story of SIREN Leader Mayela Razo and the impact that DAPA would have on her life and her family.

Maricela Gutierrez, Executive Director of Services, Immigrant Rights (SIREN), issued the following statement:

“We applaud today’s Supreme Court decision and ask that they review the case quickly and with compassion based on its merit and the incredible impact it would have on the individuals who would benefit from these programs, their families, and our nation’s economy.

“While the legal battle continues and anti-immigrant politicians continue to push their hate-fueled campaign, it is especially important to remember that these actions have a real human cost. Millions of families continue to live in legal limbo, in constant fear of separation, and without any certainty as to when they might be able to live without that fear.”

“We are hopeful the Supreme Court will rule in favor of the administration and allow the executive actions to be implemented. Over 65,000 Santa Clara County residents have been denied justice for over a year by the delay in implementing DAPA and expanded DACA. Today, a little bit more light shines in their shadows because we know we stand on legal ground and on the right side of history. We will continue this fight until we prevail.”
