United Against Violence and Hatred // Unidos Contra La Violencia y El Odio

Dear SIREN Community,

The past week has been a harrowing one in the wake of the tragic shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival last Sunday and subsequent shootings in El Paso and Dayton. The Garlic Festival, one normally filled with joy, fun, and building community with food, was marred by unspeakable violence. Families and community members who attend and are part of the festival each year come from all different backgrounds to enjoy the food grown with such pride and care by the largely Latinx farmworkers from this agricultural community. We hold dearly in our thoughts all those whose lives were impacted by the horrific violence that occurred.

The victims of the devastating tragedy at the Gilroy Garlic Festival included three young lives who were lost that day. We are deeply saddened to share that a loved one within the SIREN family was among them. Keyla Salazar, a youth SIRENISTA who was only 13 years old, had her life taken away too soon. She was a shining light who brought joy to so many. Our hearts go out to Katiuska, our team member, and Keyla’s family as well as the families and loved ones of 6-year-old Stephen Romero, 25-year-old Trevor Irby, and the dozen injured by the mass shooting.

During this time, our communities need to heal and support one another. We encourage community members to support the families of those who have loved ones who lost their lives or are injured. This past weekend, the nation and the immigrant community have also been grappling with the tragic shootings in El Paso and Dayton with the perpetrators reportedly holding virulent views against immigrants and women, respectively. The victims and survivors of the past week’s shootings were overwhelmingly immigrants or people of color. These acts of violence and domestic terrorism do not occur in a vacuum - particularly with Trump being the loudest champion of white supremacy, xenophobia, and misogyny through his words and his policies. Everyone deserves a safe community regardless of who we are or where we come from.

We stand together as a community to heal. We stand together united against hatred and violence. We stand together, in memory of those whose lives were taken away, for a country that is welcoming and safe for everyone.

La semana pasada fue desgarradora tras el trágico tiroteo en el Festival de Ajo de Gilroy el domingo pasado y los tiroteos posteriores en El Paso, Tejas y Dayton, Ohio. El Festival del Ajo, es un evento lleno de alegría, diversión y estar en comunidad con comida, se vio empañado por una violencia indescriptible. Las familias y los miembros de la comunidad que asisten y son parte del festival cada año provienen de diferentes orígenes para disfrutar de la comida cultivada con orgullo y cuidado por los trabajadores agrícolas en gran parte de gente Latina de esta comunidad agrícola. Mantenemos en nuestros pensamientos a todos aquellos cuyas vidas fueron impactadas por la horrible violencia que ocurrió.

Las víctimas de la devastadora tragedia en el Festival del Ajo de Gilroy incluyeron tres vidas jóvenes que se perdieron ese día. Nos entristece profundamente compartir que un ser querido dentro de la familia SIREN estaba entre ellos.
