The Biden Administration Considers Return to Disgraceful Practice of Incarcerating Families Seeking Help

Despite promises to restore the US as a haven for asylum and refugees, Biden doubles down on endangering migrants seeking help with relaunch of Trump Policy

California — An article published by the New York Times yesterday, Monday March 6, revealed that the Biden administration is considering detaining migrant families seeking refuge and asylum together, a controversial practice first enacted by the Trump administration in 2017, and ended by the Biden administration after public outcry condemning the deplorable practice. Below is a statement from SIREN:

No matter how you rebrand it, rename it or retry it, there is no logical reason to place human beings in cages. The Biden administration’s cowardly retreat to Trumpian archetypes to address the issues of a broken immigration system represent a betrayal to the values of the American’s who placed this administration in power. The proposed return to draconian tactics to scare migrants already fleeing out of necessity will do nothing more than hurt our nation.

That the Biden administration can even fathom a return to this disgraceful idea of meeting need with incarceration is a strong reminder to us a movement that we can no longer stand idly by while the topic of immigration is twisted, misrepresented, and used as a bargaining chip to capitulate to far-right ideology.

We will not relent until it is clear that American’s will not accept institutionalized hate as a policy for those seeking help. We stand firm in our belief that we are a welcoming nation, rich in resources and opportunity because of years of international exploitation and fear-mongering. The Biden administration must acknowledge its responsibility to the world and accept migrants with care and compassion, not cages.
